The Instruments · The Academic Year
The dates that govern the year.
The academic year in London runs on ancient rails — a Michaelmas autumn, a Lent spring, an Easter term. Around them turn the modern machinery of application windows, offer deadlines and (in one small ritual) the tuxedo'd summer balls. Dates are indicative; always confirm with the institutions and UCAS.
Septemberundefined
Michaelmas Term begins
Most universities convene the first Monday on or after 29 September (the Feast of St Michael). UCL, KCL, LSE, QMUL share this rhythm.
Octoberundefined
Freshers' Fair & matriculation
Bureaucratic and bacchanalian in equal measure. The Bloomsbury squares fill with hand-lettered society signs.
Novemberundefined
Reading week
Most undergraduate courses pause for one week to allow students to catch up, sleep, or take the train to Edinburgh.
Decemberundefined
End of Michaelmas
Term closes with carols at King's College Chapel (tickets are balloted) and a final reading list distributed before the holidays.
Januaryundefined
Examinations
The great remorseful week. Most universities hold first-sit exams in the second week of January, before Hilary/Lent term starts.
Februaryundefined
Lent / Hilary Term begins
Coldest, most austere, and arguably most productive stretch of the academic year — libraries are silent, common rooms empty.
Marchundefined
Easter vacation
A three-week pause ostensibly for revision, in practice often used to flee to the Continent.
Aprilundefined
Summer Term begins
The Bloomsbury planes leaf up; exams loom in May; the cricket pitches at Lord's and the Oval open.
Mayundefined
Summer examinations
The chief examination diet for almost all undergraduate and most postgraduate programmes. Stress is generalised and unavoidable.
Juneundefined
End of teaching
Finals end; classes dissolve; revision lectures give way to prize-giving and farewell garden parties.
Julyundefined
Graduation ceremonies
Each college holds its own — Royal Festival Hall for LSE, Royal Albert Hall for Imperial, the Royal Festival Hall again for King's.
Augustundefined
A-Level results & Clearing
The annual reshuffling — Clearing places open at midnight, and university press offices prepare to comment.
Calendar reflects the typical rhythm of the UK academic year. UCAS equal-considerion dates, offer deadlines and term dates vary by institution and course — verify with each university directly before making plans.
