Guildhall School of Music & Drama
The Guildhall School was founded in 1880 by the Corporation of the City of London — the Square Mile's own conservatoire — and has kept the connection ever since: the Corporation still governs it, and the school's halls sit in the Barbican estate, the most uncompromising piece of postwar city planning in Europe.
Silk Street holds the music school and theatre; Milton Court, across the plaza, adds a concert hall and a theatre among the towers. The arrangement gives students the Barbican Centre as their campus theatre — with Daniel Craig and Bryn Terfel among the alumni who used it as a launching stage.
Field notes
- It is the only conservatoire in the world run by a city government — the Corporation of London.
- Milton Court's concert hall has one of Europe's most adjustable acoustics.
- Daniel Craig trained here before Bond — this guide's spy-rock set is completed by QMUL's Bruce Dickinson.
