Civic & Campus

The campus in the park's Inner Circle was purpose-built in 1913 for Bedford College — the women's college that later moved to Egham, merged with Royal Holloway, and whose successors appear elsewhere in this guide. When Bedford left, the site became Regent's College in 1984, and a private university in 2013 — one of Britain's few, and non-profit.

The arrangement suits it: a campus inside a royal park, Georgian-style quadrangles around lawns that no traffic crosses, and a student body of a few thousand taught in small classes on American and European lines. Business, psychotherapy, film and fashion are the strengths; the park is the amenity.

Field notes

  • The campus was built for Bedford College's women students — Queen Mary opened the laboratories in 1913.
  • It is one of only two private universities in Britain with degree-awarding powers from the start.
  • The park's Open Air Theatre, next door, is Europe's largest — summertime Shakespeare within earshot of the library.

In brief — from the field guide

A private, non-profit university inside Regent's Park — on the campus built for Bedford College, the women's college whose Egham successor fills another page of this guide. American in style, London in situation.
