West Ham Technical Institute opened in 1898 to teach the trades of the docks — engineering, building, the work of the river. A century of mergers and renamings later, the University of East London stands at the Royal Albert Dock, where the water planes used to land, and at Stratford, where the 2012 Olympics reset the East End's centre of gravity.

The Docklands campus is a rare thing in Britain: purpose-built, waterfront, and designed for a commuting student body. Its architecture school, its psychology department and its sports science — set beside the Olympic infrastructure — anchor a university that has grown with, and sometimes ahead of, the regeneration around it.

Field notes

  • The Royal Albert Dock campus sits literally on the water — the old seaplane terminal is its neighbour.
  • Stratford's post-Olympic campus keeps the press centre's bones under its library.
  • Its archives hold the trades-union records of the docks the institute was built to serve.
